We Were Here

We Were Here

Project by Ahmet Rüstem and Hakan Sorar.

Can an AI-generated JPEG file, produced by a text-to-image AI tool, be transformed into a dimensional/layered object? Inspired by cave paintings from various countries, the artwork “We Were Here” explores this question, presenting a topographical narrative through the layered traces of a 3D clay printer. Utilizing depth maps and various algorithms, this image was transformed into a volumetric object with the aid of 3D modeling software and was produced on August 7, 2023.

Printed at Solidified Studio in 45 pieces with 40 kg of locally sourced red clay from Avanos and fired at 1040°C, each piece’s printing time varied between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, totaling approximately 96 hours. Before firing, the dimensions were 107×60 cm with a maximum height of 5.5 cm.

This piece was featured in the “Rest in Pieces” exhibition hosted by Bilsart and Monoco from December 2 to December 30, 2023.
