Beyond The Wall- IABA 2025

"The future is what will happen tomorrow, later, or in the next century. There is a foreseeable, planned, and programmed future. But there is also L’avenir; a future whose arrival is entirely unpredictable. For me, that is the true future.” Jacques Derrida

The notion of “in-between” exists within a holistic state of being, defined by separation and differentiation. When we describe any physical or abstract condition as “in-between,” it already implies what lies before or after. Yet in the 21st century, humanity faces a time when the future grows uncertain and the past fades away.

Within this framework, “Beyond the Wall”, presented at the 2025 Antalya Architecture Biennale, stands neither as a remnant of the past nor a promise of the future, but as an act of transcending the present amid today’s global tensions.

As one of architecture’s fundamental elements, the brick has taken many forms across time and geography, yet for over ten millennia its dominant shape has remained the rectangular prism; standardized by the industry and embedded in the urban fabric.

This work frees the brick from this rigid typology through 21st-century digital fabrication; its surface flows and folds like a curtain. Produced via ceramic 3D printing without molds, therefore, each brick is uniquely shaped to meet the needs of the design.
