Bio-Informed 3D Printed Masonry
Over three millennia ago, the first vaults were constructed using sun-dried mud bricks, a solution born from the arid Egyptian climate. This marked the beginning of a non-linear evolution of brick morphology, influenced by environmental, economic, and sociological factors. The humble brick, a product of human techne, has transcended its practical origins to become a symbol of cultural memory, continuity, and reinvention. Its influence can be seen in the vaulting tubes of Northern Africa, the hollow voussoirs of Roman Britain's baths, and the rainwater-filtering bricks of Venice's wells.
Crafted from the Earth's most abundant materials, the "simple brick" can shed light into perceiving Heidegger's insight of what it means to dwell. Yet, in the 21st century, as digital transformation and computerized manufacturing redefine architectural processes, a critical question emerges: What form will the brick take next?
